![]() The emphasis is laid on mask-dance, music, and comedy. The real killing of a surrogate victim moreover seems to have been overlooked or ignored in recent anthropological studies about exorcism in the Sinhala Buddhist part of Sri Lanka. now it has been generally understood, that animal sacrifice was eradicated completely from Sinhala Buddhist society. The central part of the study deals with the ritual of sacrificing a surrogate victim to placate the "violent" demons Mahasona and Riri Yakka, when they take possession of human beings. The author first explains that the original residents of Sri Lanka were demonized after having been subjugated by the Aryan newcomer (conqueror) from North India furthermore Buddhism adapted itself to this process of demonizing inhabitants and their gods. ![]() ![]() In this study concerning exorcising demons (yakku) in Sinhala Buddhism the scapegoat mechanism theory of René Girard is used as reference.
